One of the most common questions I get from clients is:
"What’s the best way to lose belly fat?"
The truth is, there isn’t a single exercise or trick that specifically burns fat from your stomach. Despite what social media might suggest, you can’t spot reduce fat from one area of the body. However, there are proven ways to reduce overall body fat, which will naturally reduce belly fat over time. Here are the key things that make the biggest difference.
1. Be in a calorie deficit
Fat loss comes down to using more energy than you consume. This doesn’t mean starving yourself or cutting out all the foods you enjoy. It simply means creating a small calorie deficit through a combination of nutrition and activity. Consistency here is what really drives results.
2. Strength train regularly
Many people think endless cardio is the answer to fat loss, but strength training is one of the most effective tools. Lifting weights helps build muscle, and muscle increases the amount of calories your body burns throughout the day. This makes it easier to maintain fat loss long term.
3. Increase your daily movement
One of the simplest habits I encourage with my clients is increasing daily steps.
Walking more throughout the day can significantly increase your calorie expenditure without feeling overly difficult or exhausting. It’s often the missing piece for people who feel like they are doing everything right.
4. Manage stress and sleep
Poor sleep and high stress levels can increase hunger hormones and cravings, making fat loss much harder. Aim for around 7–8 hours of sleep per night and build routines that help you unwind and recover.
The Bottom Line
There is no shortcut to losing belly fat, but there is a clear process:
Eat in a small calorie deficit
Strength train regularly
Move more throughout the day
Prioritise sleep and recovery
If you stay consistent with these habits, belly fat will reduce over time as your overall body fat decreases.
